Media Opening 1st Draft-Zaahid Asvat — January 23, 2020

Media Opening 1st Draft-Zaahid Asvat

Our main feedback was try and find a way of concluding and have a welcoming title. That was the main priority and then we also had to find a way to add production labels and titles onto our main screen.

The pros were we already had a strong and clear meaning behind and a strong genre which meant people already knew it was an action movie. Another pro was that we had incorporated score and it fitted our movie quite well.

Feedback-Jack Corrigan

Feedback from the first daft of our opening-Tally if done correctly

EBI points

The dismantle part was a montage

Fix the sound, less shaky camera, its very long, different shots should be used

Titles, more footage and more lighting

No titles, meaning not clear meaning, zoom not smooth, lighting keeps changing, still needs needs development.

Not many fonts were used, mise en scene doesn’t match, soundtrack comes on randomly which affects the continuity, make the soundtrack slowly increase to create tension and make it sound smoother.

No titles

Screen shots of editing with description of what has been done? — January 10, 2020

Screen shots of editing with description of what has been done?

The countdown is new piece of editing we had added in, as it represents the bomb timer and we use fast cuts to show this real time counter to the subject struggling to disarm the bomb. It adds as a trigger for suspense and tension for the audience and the subject.

Another new addition to our editing process was the title, “The day Of Reckoning”, the name our movie which we are creating the opening for and also another effect we added which was the explosion effect, which you can see in the bottom right corner to add climax to the stress.

In this shot, is the first of the credits we have also edited in for the cast working on the project, for example here we have here the camera man’s credit for the shot.

In this these pictures we have our newly edited overlay effects which are here to connote confusion and disorientation of the subject in his current state and to show the audience how the character is waking up this new mysterious location for the first time.

Editing diary Day 2 and 3 — January 9, 2020

Editing diary Day 2 and 3

On the second day or reviewing our project, we realized that we wanted to make some changes to the original piece we had made and edited. we changes we made were;

jump cuts

invisible cuts

We also added a timer to the video and use the fast cuts to switch between the subject and the bomb to act as a trigger to enforce the stress and tension for the audience and towards the actor.

we added a overlay too, for the effect of confusion and disorientation for when the subject first wakes up.

Diary Entry 1-Filming and Editing — December 5, 2019

Diary Entry 1-Filming and Editing

Camera shots

In our first day of filming, we were shooting in a small space so shots were limited in a range of extreme close up to medium-long shots. The shots we had used in our opening of a film project were;

Extreme close up-We used this shot for when capturing the facial expression of the subject in one specific location, in our project, we focused mostly on the subjects eyes.

Close up-We use this shot when capturing a shot of the subjects face when he is waking up into confusion and this is seen through the blurred vision connoting this effect onto the character.

P.O.V. shot-This shot was captured when at a low angle to show the room from the perspective of character who is currently sitting down in this scene.

Medium-close shot-We use this shot when capturing the side angle of the subject walking towards the bomb to then attempt to defuse it.

Medium shot- This shot type was used during the filming of our opening when establishing the room the subject was currently in, using the camera to so the extent or the area from a medium range.

Pan shot-We also used the pan shot as an establishing shot to show the room from the level of the subject.

What went well on the day

on the day of filming we were able to film our first few shots with relative ease like our first few shots being a POV shot which wasn’t too hard to perform, the shot looks around the room to with a filter overlay to connote just waking up a new setting, we had executed this shot perfectly to how we needed it to be by capturing exactly what we wanted then enhancing it later with the editing.

our next shot being the character now waking up did take some attempts to make as there was an issue with getting the correct angle and timing but on the third attempt we were able to achieve the shot we needed to.

The shot after this was a zoom in shot on a screwdriver but from the perspective of the character again to show what he is about to do next, with a sign enticing the subject saying “Go on prevent the inevitable”which then leads him to then pick up the screwdriver and try to defuse the device.

Editing

The opening of our film was edited by one member of our group with all of the ideas and structures formed by the group being put into the place of our project, we used a variety of different editing techniques such as fast paced cuts, invisible cuts, use of cutting/match on action to connect each shot from one to the next and also the use of many different non diegetic sounds like beeping and intense music. We utilized these sounds to enhance each scene building tension for the viewer watching and make them feel how the character/subject of the film is feeling in this moment, feelings such as anxiety, frustration and fear for the character.

Reflection-Jack Corrigan and Zaahid Asvat

What is your idea

We knew straight away that we wanted to do something in the action genre but what the story would be we still did know, we had some idea sessions to think of what type of action story we wanted to do with many suggestions being thought and brought up as a group, in the end we wanted to do a non-superhero action story (a hero with no superpowers) set in a gritty realistic type tone with narrative with the usual connotations of this genre. a project which would involve things such as fight scenes and high momentum.

Why did you come up with this idea?-link to your research? and age rating? how will it reach the target audience?

When doing the research in our pre-planning stage, from looking at opening of action films such as Dark knight, rampage and some others. We decided that we wanted to do it in the 13+ age rating so after this we had made an questionnaire as part of our research to give to a pier group so see what type of response we would get to our idea, seeing if this idea is maybe too over done or if there is enough interest into it to begin production.

We know it will reach the young target teen audience we want it to is because the films of similar nature we researched indicated big success with the audience we are going for, sparking franchises like the batman trilogy which also features a non superhero like our project does and also works alongside our results from our survey, showing an area loved by young teens.

A change in direction-our new story-Jack Corrigan and zaahid asvat

Jack Corrigan:

So in careful consideration we decided that a non superhero action movie opening would be too hard to do as it would take intense co-ordination for fight scenes and may impact on timing since this is only an opening plus may too violent for our young teen audience. so our new story will be explained here.

Zaahid Asvat

We want to shoot an opening to a action movie, we plan on opening it with a high edge of the seat action right from the get-go. We want to choose a character that can look so suspicious and good at one time or a character with great facial expressions and strong body language. To start the opening we wanted to shock but make the audience question what type of movie they are about to watch as a character just wakes up and is feeling nervous and worried. From there we will have a camera that is a tracking shot of the character until he see’s the problem or a bomb. Then I think a established shot of the location for 4 seconds, then a very quick transition onto the prop which will hopefully would be a bomb. Then we have a close up of the character trying to stop the attack. Currently we have two options after this, one of it is the bomb explodes then we have the opening title and a couple of titles. After a couple titles then we will have a doctor and the character in a hospital bed and we try and help the patient. However we will not continue any further as we leave it at a tension hanging point. The second option was the main character does stop the bomb from exploding but then will be on a hunt to try and catch the antagonist or the villain. This links perfectly to Vladmir Propp’s, 7 character theory, where we have a hero and a villain and because its not a full movie we wont have all 7 characters immediately. With this we would either need to add a couple more disruptions to try and drag it out for the 2 minutes. Another theorist that this story could link to is Todorov’s narrative theory which includes a equilibrium, disruption, recognition of disruption and an attempt to repair the disruption.

What platforms will it be available on?

through advertising this project it will be through social media, through sites and apps such as;

Instagram

Snapchat

facebook

other social media sites like twitter

The video will then be available on YouTube where the opening will be able to be viewed through many platforms of device this way like;

phone

computer

laptop

ipad/tablet

How long is this going to take to make? What is your shooting schedule?

Our project had taken a week to plan and organise ready to shoot with the shooting schedule we have here

This is our shooting schedule that we are going to follow in order for our film to run smoothly and effectively. We will be filming over a time span of 3 days so that we have time for editing and to fix any errors that may occur.

DateTime Shots
Thursday 5th December 20195 : 30Opening Shots and your main established shot of the location
Friday 6th December 6 : 00Introduction to the characters and start the main filming of Z trying to unlock the bomb
Saturday 7th December 4 : 00Film the bomb scene and any other scenes that need working on

What happens if your main actors pull out? What are your contingency plans to ensure filming runs smoothly?

We have planned and created many different routes if an actor for example gets hurt, ill or for some reason can’t do the filming stage for our project, we have made sure we had started production early so this way if an actor pulls out, then there is lots of time for them to recover from what is stopping them from attending the shooting days. this way meanwhile the actor is not there we can make sure film still runs smoothly and just record the scenes which don’t include them.

What age rating will it be? How will you know it will reach the relevant target audience?

The age rating will be 15 so this way we are targeting a much wider range of people who are most likely to go the cinema with their friends, partners or even family. Since this is the age we are going for when making our project we will make sure that there is only necessary violence and language and rely more on the fun entertaining side of the action genre with mystery but not to the point of moving into a different age band therefore keeping our range of viewers we want guaranteeing the best success possible. as we see here we have complied with the BBFC guidelines for this age stamp.

Image result for bbfc age rating 15

We think this will think this will reach our target audience because with it being a 15 age rated action movie, similar to other movies in this genre like which were a huge success making 760 million dollars in the box office gross profits, we were also reach our audience because we have chosen this age range to full utilize media convergence to spread with the audience who use their technology the most.

How can you ensure me no copyright issues will occur?

When creating our project we have made sure we have either created the source material ourselves or pulled it from copyright free websites, if we used any material which could infringe copyright laws like our music, we had given credit to make sure there is no issues.

Reflection-Jack Corrigan — November 25, 2019

Reflection-Jack Corrigan

Why have you planned your opening title this way? What is your message you want to get across?

We have planned our opening title as a group in many different discussing different ideas and suggestions which we wanted for our opening, we mainly wanted each shot and the project as a whole to to apply to the usual connotations of a action movie, we planned to make sure we had fast cuts, jump cuts and invisible cuts with a momentum pace. The message we wanted to get across is to learn from your mistakes and try again and not to give up too easily. As this was aimed at a target audience around the teen age who may be going through stressful times, giving them

What elements of your research have you used?

The elements of research of research we used was questionnaires and frequent questions to a specific focus group, we used surveys to find out how our target audience would vision a usual action movie would open. we also watched videos to find out what type of title sequences are used in the buildup of the action movies and also font research which we had to find out from peers which font the would expect to see in the opening. By showing fonts to a pier group and have them vote which one they thought was more appropriate for our opening after telling them the plot/narrative. Then applying it to the video.

What do you think will be the most difficult part of filming and editing?

The most difficult part about the filming of the opening of our action movie was to get the shots just how we planned or wanted them to be, some were difficult to shoot as we could either not get the angle we wanted for the shot like we designed in the storyboard. there was also some difficulties with trying to get the correct timing or each shot to match our pre-production plans which lead us to retake some shots.

The difficulties we had it came to the editing stage of our opening to our action movie was merging the correct shots together and finding the right music to create the appropriate tone that we need. When editing the shots we found that some of our shots were too long and kills the momentum of the action pace so we had keep shots short to keep that installment of the sense of fear and anxiety for the character.

What have you learnt from your preliminary task in order ensure your opening titles are better?

We have learnt more about filming and editing of the our projects and how to improve our stance and review of of each project we make to match with the genre we are working with. We have learned how every project isn’t going to be easy as we may plan it on sheets easy enough but on the day we need to be prepared with every situation or probability which could occur and affect filming.

Risk Assessment — November 23, 2019

Risk Assessment

RiskHow it will effect our group?what will we do to avoid it?
Slippery floorsAs working in a house environment, some floors in each room may have different materials or may have alternating conditions like being wet, causing slip ups in scenes which can result in different sorts of injury or event destruction of equipment as it can be dropped and break. Before filming each scene we will make sure that the floors are suitable for shooting scenes, make sure subjects and cameraman are able perform the scene without the risk of falling over during filming, this will be done when choosing carefully which space to work in and how to act in that area.
Loose and exposed wiring/cables When Filming shots, there is a risk of injury or equipment failure if one our subjects/actors can either trip over wires which are too far out or in the way of walkways. Before filming scenes, we will make sure any wiring that is out of place or is in a pathway or cause injury or equipment failure, this will be done through tidying away through any tie method like zip locks or make sure the are not in the way entirely by placing the wires in alternate routes.
Danger of roads/ construction in areaAround the area we are filming, there are many main roads with the danger of cars driving up and and down the street which comes of the risk of one of the actors or cameramen being hit. Also around the place which we are filming, there are lots of construction work being conducted which could result in delays of filming or result in injury when maneuvering around or over any construction areas. From this we will have to plan ahead and accordingly and act on our contingency plans if delays are caused plus watch our footing when operating equipment in unsafe areas or make sure its packed away. we will also have to watch the roads and film what we the shots we need when there there is a break in car activity on the road.
Liquid near electronics and machinery During filming actors and cameramen may need breaks which will result in possibly liquids being near electrical equipment, if spilled can result in short circuiting equipment and can also start fires which can result in major damage to the are of shooting and our group who are using it. To avoid problems such as this to occur, we need to take care to make certain that there are no risks of spillage or overloading circuits, making sure no fires or major injury will happen.
